Growing Your Own

It that time of the year again. Time to start thinking about what we’re going to plant in the family garden.

I’m particularly excited about the garden this year. I think its because we did plant last year. We simply had too much going on for Elaine and I to devote the kind of time needed to work it like it requires.

Some other things are going to be new this year too.

For one we are going to plant about half of the area that we have planted in the past. In the past we have planted something on the area of 22,500 square feet. That’s a big garden. To put it into prospective that is about a one third of a football field.

The idea behind this downsizing is that we should be able to provide better care and water to a smaller amount of plants. With better care we hope to increase our yield.

This down sizing in something new to me. I learned to grow a garden by watching my father. And he firmly believed in “the more the merrier” principle. In other words if there was a bare spot of dirt he planted something on it.

In the coming weeks we’ll be getting our seeds ready to go into the green house and we invite you to follow along.
